Three non-government advocacy groups, the Environmental Health Strategy Center, the Healthy Building Network and Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families, have released information on some of the first ten chemicals targeted for review by the United States EPA under Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) rules. In particular, they noted that six of the chemicals, asbestos, 1-bromopropane (NPB), carbon tetrachloride (CTC), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP), and methylene chloride (DCM), which are under some manufacturing restrictions in the US, are still widely imported to this country. Asbestos, a hazardous substance which the EPA was unable to ban under TSCA, is 99% imported from Brazil. In some cases chemical imports were not reported to the government as required by TSCA.
